EXERCISE IS THE BEST MEDICINE
Imagine a pill that had the power to do all the following:
prevent bone loss
boost brain power & decrease biomarkers for dementia & Alzheimer's disease
protect against chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, & many cancers
boost mood and improve sleep
improve memory
support immunity
Doctors would surely prescribe that pill to every patient, drug companies would quickly produce and market it, and we would all clamor for it. The truth is, there is no "magic pill" but regular exercise can provide all those benefits (without the annoying side effects).
The power of exercise and moving our bodies is undeniable. It's like "medicine" and those who chose to "take it" live longer and enjoy a higher quality of life. While you can't completely stop aging, staying active can slow down the processes that lead to disease and immobility.
The good news is that exercise doesn't have to be rigorous for you to gain the health benefits. The National Council on Aging recommends the following:
moderate exercise-at least 150 minutes per week (walking, swimming, biking)
muscle strengthening activities-at least 2 or more days per week (it's best to try to work the major muscle group)
balance activities-they don’t provide specific parameters but I would recommend at least 2 days per week ( falls are a leading cause of disability in older adults)
Stats show that less than one-third of Americans over the age of 65 meet these recommendations. However, it is never too late to start. If you are someone who has been inactive, it is always a good idea to check with your doctor first and then begin slowly. A great place to start is walking at a moderate pace on level ground. Of course, you can always enlist the help of a professional to help you establish a safe and effective exercise plan!
It is important to embrace the idea of moving at every stage of life. Regular exercise should be considered a “prescription” to help you maintain or improve your physical and mental health. In the end, exercise truly is the best medicine.
